Pontchartrain Elementary - Tchefuncte Middle School

Fauntleroy & Latham, Inc. (Lead Architects) / Holly & Smith Architects; A Joint Venture, provided full architectural services for the design of this 140,000 square foot school facility. This new building combines two schools under one roof on a 25 acre site in Mandeville, Louisiana.

These schools are designed for a student population of approximately 700 each and provide all functions necessary for the education of elementary (K-3) and middle school (4,5,6)students.

The facility, by program, created a very complex design problem by requiring each school to be independent and separate from the other except for minor common elements, such as the kitchen, service yard and a professional library, but architecturally had to reflect the identity of each school on an equal basis. The architects achieved this program requirement by locating the common elements in a central position and the two schools on opposite sides in basically a mirrored-image or symmetrical arrangement.

By the functional integration of the building frame with a pitched standing seam metal roof and a durable exterior and interior materials used in creative ways, the designers were successful in developing a school that was economically constructed and quite aesthetically pleasing.

Completion Date: 1994
Construction Cost: $8,483,000

Cypress Cove Elementary School

Fauntleroy & Latham provided full architectural services for the design and construction of the school on Military Road in Slidell, Louisiana. The school site is directly adjacent to Honey Island Elementary School and the facility was programmed to be a "sister" school to its neighbor.

The campus feel of the two schools was created by re-using a pallet of the major exterior materials from Honey Island on Cypress Cove in imaginative ways to help create a distinct identity for the new school. Cypress Cove is designed for a student population of 600 and provides all requirements necessary for the education of kindergarten and first grade students.

The skillful use of sturdy and long lasting exterior and interior materials with an efficient pre-engineered building frame and a sloped standing seam metal roof provided the design materials the architects required to develop an economical and aesthetically appealing facility.

Soft background colors with the introduction of bright accents, curved walls at key locations, sloped ceilings at classrooms, interesting ceiling shapes at public areas, and large amounts of glass create an exciting learning environment for the students.

Construction Cost: $4,076,000

Honey Island Elementary School

Fauntleroy & Latham Architects/J. Ashley Inabnet Architect, Inc., A Joint Venture, provided full architectural services for the design and construction of the school on Military Road in Slidell, Louisiana. Within its 66,000 square feet, the school houses all functions necessary for the complete education of kindergarten through second grade students.

With the use of off-the-shelf building systems, post-tensioned concrete slabs, and non-load-bearing masonry walls, the architects were able to give the client all of the items included in the building program plus a project which bid under budget.
