Veterans Memorial

We approached this design as an opportunity to create an urban park memorial to our veterans rather than a stand alone monument or statue and concluded that this design should be not just a reactive memorial, but an outdoor space that would:

1.    Host all Memorial and Veterans Day celebrations in the Parish.

2.    Provide a destination that could enhance the downtown attraction of Covington and the Parish to veterans and families.

3.    Create an inviting and stimulating space with a water feature, sloped grass seating, and benches.

4.    Design a space that is secure and could be accessed by visitors 24 hours a day.

Fauntleroy and Latham's design entry was selected by a panel of Veterans and St. Tammany Parish officials over many other entries from this region.   The entries were submitted without the authors name or individual information displayed, so that no politics or cronyism could be involved.  Obviously, when the competition winner was announced,  we were ecstatic that our concept was accepted and have volunteered our design time to make this happen.

The design features an approximately 100' diameter half-circle plaza area of monogrammed brick pavers, grass and landscaping, and pre-cast concrete with individual monuments, sloped amphitheater seating areas, an eternal flame, and flags of the US government, State of Louisiana, and the POW/MIA memorial seal.  The park is located adjacent to the plaza entrance to the Columbia Street vestibule of the new Justice Center  The six branches of service are memorialized with individual 9 foot high granite blocks featuring the seal, motto, and date of inception of each branch.  Flagpoles and benches are located adjacent to the memorials.  Landscaping, trees, and irrigation are also included in the design.  The park will be lighted at night, especially the flags and memorial blocks, as is required by US military customs.

The design was displayed in Washington with David Vitter and in Baton Rouge with former Gov. Foster and we received great feedback.  We feel this is an award for not just our firm, but for the entire St. Tammany Parish community, and especially our veterans.
