St. Tammany Parish Hospital - Covington, LA

The New Millennium

Fauntleroy & Latham was selected by St. Tammany Parish Hospital to master plan and design The New Millennium. Fauntleroy & Latham associated with Vitetta, a national healthcare consultant, to develop this major renovation/addition project which will greatly improve the functional, physical, and aesthetic aspects of the current facility. Phase One work, completed in 1999, included relocating Administrative, Information Systems, Building Services, Materials Management and other departments into a newly-constructed 15,000 square foot Support Services Building and the Dietary Department into new quarters, so that approximately 7,000 square feet of existing construction could be demolished. Phases Two and Three work, completed in 2004, included the demolition of an additional 57,000 square feet of out-dated construction and now incorporates approximately 196,000 square feet of new multi-story construction and renovation of the remaining existing space completing the functional reorganization of the hospital. The exterior facade and main entrance is now modernized and a new physical image has been presented to the community. Other exterior improvements have included increased parking and landscaping, fountains and ponds, way-finding graphics and other amenities that update the hospital’s image, from a simple "Parish" hospital to the regional medical center that it has become.

Construction Cost: $42,000,000

Fourth Floor Medical/Surgical Unit

This build-out to St. Tammany Parish Hospital fourth floor contains 14 new private patient rooms.

Attention to the patient's needs was the basis for design.

Every two patient rooms are designed with a nurse alcove station between, where patients may be monitored continuously.

Patient rooms have a pleasant environment with warm and inviting materials. In lieu of the traditional patient bed lighting, we chose to incorporate a graphic light with a mixture of various "sky" scenery for a more peaceful effect.

The nurse control station is very stylish with wood & solid surface millwork and countertops, pendant lighting and the "infusions" accent canopies above. Multi-level ceilings with curved "Axiom" aluminum trim, give the space an elegant impression.

Completion Date: 2008
Construction Cost: $2.9 Million

ER/ICU

This three floor addition to St. Tammany Parish Hospital housed a state of the art emergency room and intensive care unit on the first floor, and forty-two private and semi-private rooms on the second and third floors. The original hospital was constructed in the mid-1950's and while Fauntleroy & Latham has been involved with several renovations and modernizations, this addition was a major step toward keeping pace with the rapidly growing community the hospital serves.

Emergency Entrance

A large skylighted porte cochere leads to the walk-in emergency room entrance. Supporting the ER and ICU are open, free flowing nurses’ stations and well-equipped trauma and exam rooms. The nursing unit above consists of two floors including a total fifty beds. Two V.I.P. suites and six accessible rooms are provided within the nursing unit.

Throughout the facility, imaginative materials, bright colors, wall covering borders and floor patterns all combine to create an atmosphere conducive to healing.

Construction Cost: $8,963,881.00

Cath Lab

When the St. Tammany Parish Hospital decided to begin cardiac catheterization procedures, an existing area within the hospital first had to be allocated and then completely renovated to accommodate the highly technical procedure.

Fauntleroy & Latham was able to work with the hospital in identifying a space which could be re-utilized and then plan the total renovation of that area.

Because of the sensitivity of the equipment, a stabilizing support cage was erected above the ceiling so that the lateral positioner was limited to .06 inches of movement.

Lead shielding in the walls protects those outside the procedure room from radiation.  Emergency power back-up systems, integrated computer controls and remote monitoring devices, as well as the other equipment utilized during the procedures, are all part of this highly successful new service.

Nurse Station

The renovation of a 34-bed patient care unit at the St. Tammany Parish Hospital presented a challenge that required the relocation and organization of the nursing core. The design concept expanded and centrally positioned the nursing core to offer excellent visual communication between the nurse, visitor, and patient and easier and efficient circulation to provide orderly patient care activities.

The work stations were designed with attention to efficiency of work tasks and comfort of the user. Soft and pleasing colors were used to create a relaxing atmosphere and surface textures work to control noise levels.

Construction Cost: $190,000
